A study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It showed that individuals who had at least 55 grams of cheese daily had a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as twelve percent. They were compared to individuals who did not eat cheese daily. The amount consumed each day was equivalent to two slices of cheese. The researchers who conducted the study believed the reason for the decrease in developing diabetes could be caused by the presence of probiotic bacteria present in dairy products. This bacteria is able to lower a person’s cholesterol and create vitamins that protect against the development of diabetes.

Individuals who have to deal with the symptoms of insomnia may help their condition with dairy products. There is a naturally occurring protein in milk that has been linked to improving a person’s quality of sleep and increasing their alertness during the day. Dairy products will increase a body’s levels of melatonin and serotonin. These are able to assist a person in getting a good night’s sleep. Dairy products are easy on a person’s stomach and can provide a calming effect.

Allergies
Food trials were conducted with young boys in a hospital. They were suffering from skeletal and muscular pains. Some had asthma, headaches, abdominal pains and dark circles beneath their eyes. All of them showed significant improvement a few days after dairy products such as chocolate were removed from their diet. They also had improvements with their mood and behavior. After a few weeks of a diet without dairy products, the milk and chocolate were again introduced into their diets. In each case, their symptoms returned. Researchers concluded that allergic reactions to dairy can be severe, but may be cured quickly with a dairy free diet.

Increase Breast Cancer Risk
A study was conducted with over 225 women in Italy. These were individuals who consumed milk, high-fat cheese, butter and other forms of dairy more often than women in other countries. The study showed that the women who consumed approximately 50 percent of their calories as fat, tripled their chances of developing breast cancer. According to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the study suggests when women decrease their dietary consumption of dairy and other types of animal fat, there is a significant reduction in the cases of breast cancer.

Contaminants
There are a number of contaminants found in milk that has given researchers cause for concern. These contaminants include synthetic hormones, pesticides, antibiotics and more. In the right quantities, they could have a negative effect on a person’s body. The hormones naturally present in milk are stronger than human hormones. The cows used to produce dairy products are regularly given steroids as well as hormones to help increase their milk production. Dairy cows are not fed appropriate food. They are often given food that has been genetically-modified. This includes corn, soy, cottonseed and more.
