Have you seen that image floating around the internet that shows different beverages with their varying amounts of sugar underneath in little baggies? It’s no secret that soft drinks are full of sugar, but this photo illustrates just how much compared to other drinks. One can of regular Coke has 39 grams of total sugar, which is more than 9 teaspoons. What’s even worse is that this sugar is in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a known carcinogen.
We don’t need to go on and on about the negative effects of sugar on your health. You know all that. What you are looking for is a delicious alternative to help curb your craving for unhealthy soda. Here are some ideas:
Sparkling or mineral water is naturally sugar free and calorie free. The bubbles will refresh you and wake up your mouth. Add a slice of lemon or lime and you will be addicted to this new healthy, delicious drink in no time.
Fruit infused water
Strawberries, cucumbers, lemons, oranges…these are just a few of the things you can thrown into a jug of iced water. Let it sit and become infused with refreshing flavors and extra vitamins and minerals. Here’s a great recipe for Lemon Cucumber Water:
Iced green tea
This is an easy one. Grab a grande iced green tea (no sweetener) from Starbucks. It’s cheap, antioxidant rich, hydrating, and delicious!
For a jolt of caffeine, try iced coffee. Brew a double strength pot of coffee in the morning, sweeten with Stevia, and add some coconut or almond milk to taste. Refrigerate for a few hours, and then in the afternoon you can have a drink that kicks soda’s booty!
If you must have soda, reach for a cane sugar sweetened cola from Whole Foods or Natural Grocer’s. Even though there is a still a lot of sugar, at least it is not HFCS.
